Single Side vs Double Side DTF Film: What the Terms Actually Mean

When a supplier lists "single side" or "double side" DTF film, they're describing the coating structure on the PET base — not where you print. You always print on the matte (coated) side regardless. The difference is what happens on the back of the film.

Single side DTF film has functional coating applied primarily to the printing surface. The reverse side of the PET base is left largely untreated — it's smooth and glossy. This was the original DTF film design and remains the most widely used format.

Double side DTF film (also called double-sided matte or anti-slip film) adds a secondary treatment to the back side of the PET. This back coating is typically an anti-slip or anti-static layer — it is not a second printable surface. You still print on one side only.

A single side DTF film consists of:

  • PET base layer — provides dimensional stability and heat resistance during printing and curing

When Single Side Film Is the Right Choice

Single side DTF film works well for the majority of production environments. Choose it when:

  • Your printer feeds reliably. If the machine's roller system already handles film without slipping, the extra back coating adds no value.
  • You run standard-speed production. Single side film feeds consistently at normal print speeds on most DTF printers.
  • You prioritize cost per roll. Single side film tends to be the more economical option, which matters at volume.
  • Your environment is humidity-controlled. Static is less of a problem when ambient conditions are managed.

When Double Side Film Earns Its Place

Double side film solves specific mechanical challenges. Consider it when:

  • Your printer skips or slips during long runs. The anti-slip back coating gives the feed rollers more grip, reducing misalignment on large batches.
  • You work in a dry or static-prone environment. The anti-static treatment reduces dust pickup and film clinging during loading and printing.
  • You run high-speed or multi-roll production. Faster print speeds and automated roll changes benefit from the extra feed stability.
  • You print fine-detail designs that can't tolerate any shift. Even a fraction of a millimeter of feed irregularity shows in tight registration work.

Does the Coating Structure Affect Peel Type?

No. Single side and double side film are both available in hot peel, warm peel, and cold peel variants. The coating on the back of the PET has no effect on how the printed design releases during heat transfer.
