Most DTF consumables importers start by ordering one product at a time — a pallet of film, a few cartons of powder, a trial batch of ink. That works for sampling. But once you know your volumes, splitting three product families across separate LCL shipments burns money on freight, documentation, and port handling for every single consignment.

Consolidating DTF film, hot melt powder and ink into one container changes the math. One set of export documents, one ocean freight bill, one port clearance — and your per-unit landed cost drops. This guide shows you how to plan a mixed container using real carton CBM and weight figures so you can estimate what fits before you request a formal quotation.

Why a mixed container makes sense for DTF consumables

Three reasons drive importers toward mixed FCL:

  1. Freight cost per carton drops sharply. A single carton shipped LCL might cost $80–150 in ocean freight and handling. In a 20GP container carrying 500+ cartons, that per-unit freight can fall to $2–5 per carton.
  2. One clearance, one set of documents. Three LCL shipments mean three bills of lading, three customs entries, three port handling charges. One FCL means one.
  3. You match your real consumption ratio. If your production eats 3 rolls of film for every 1 carton of powder and 2 cartons of ink, your container should mirror that — not force you into overstock on one line while running out of another.

Container sizes: how much space do you actually have?

Three container types dominate DTF consumable imports from China. The figures below are industry-standard internal volumes [^1]:

The practical ceiling is lower than the theoretical volume. Cartons rarely stack perfectly; pallets, air gaps, and load distribution eat 10–15% of the rated volume. For planning purposes, treat a 20GP as roughly 28–30 m³ of usable space and a 40HQ as roughly 65–68 m³.

Weight is almost never the binding constraint for DTF consumables. A 20GP payload limit of 25+ tonnes is hard to reach with film (light) and powder/ink (dense but not that dense). Volume fills first in nearly every realistic mix.

Real carton data: film, powder, and ink CBM

DTF transfer film

Film cartons are relatively light and rectangular. The CBM per carton depends on roll width and quantity:

Note: drum CBM is higher than bag or carton formats. If you are optimizing for container fill, the 25 kg bag or 1 kg/5 kg sub-pack cartons pack more net weight into each cubic metre.

DTF ink (white + CMYK)

Ink cartons are mid-weight and relatively uniform across colors:

CMYK cartons share identical dimensions. White ink cartons are marginally larger by CBM.

Worked example: a half-full 20GP starter mix

A distributor placing their first consolidated order might combine:

At roughly 9 m³ and 4.6 tonnes, this load fills under a third of a 20GP. The importer has room to scale — they could double or triple each line before approaching the container's practical ceiling. The weight is nowhere near the 25-tonne payload limit.

Worked example: pushing a 20GP toward full

A higher-volume importer running three product lines simultaneously might load:

At roughly 24 m³ and 12.2 tonnes, this sits comfortably inside a 20GP (28–30 m³ usable). The importer could add 80–120 more cartons before hitting the practical ceiling. Weight remains far below the limit.

If the same importer expects growth, they might step up to a 40HQ (65–68 m³ usable) and load 2× to 2.5× these quantities, or add UV DTF AB film and cleaning solution cartons into the mix.

How to build your own container plan

Step 1: Know your monthly consumption per product line

Track how many rolls of film, kilograms of powder, and kilograms of ink your production or resale business moves each month. A container should cover 1–3 months so you are not sitting on excessive inventory, but you are also not reordering every two weeks.

Step 2: Convert consumption to carton counts

Use the carton quantities from your supplier's SKU list. For ChromaBind products, each variant's carton quantity, CBM and gross weight are recorded at the SKU level — you do not need to estimate from family averages.

Step 3: Multiply by CBM and check against your target container

Do not pack to 100% of theoretical volume. Leave 10–15% for loading gaps, dunnage, and pallets if used.

Step 4: Factor in HS code separation

DTF film (HS 3920620000), powder (HS 3909500000), and ink (HS 3215902000) fall under different customs headings. Most destinations accept mixed HS codes on one bill of lading, but confirm with your freight forwarder. The packing list must clearly separate each HS code with its carton count, net weight, and gross weight.

Practical considerations before you commit

Stowage matters. Film cartons are long and flat (e.g., 0.62 m long); powder cartons are squarish; ink cartons sit in between. A good container plan groups similar carton footprints together and places heavier cartons (powder, ink) at the bottom.

Moisture protection. Ink and powder cartons should not sit directly on the container floor without a moisture barrier. Desiccant packs and a plastic liner are standard for ocean freight.

Drum vs. carton trade-off. Drums are sturdy but waste CBM — a 20 kg drum (0.05433 m³) takes up 60% more volume than a 25 kg bag (0.03377 m³) for roughly the same net weight. If your receiving warehouse handles bags, the bag format wins on freight economics.

Documentation readiness. Before you load, confirm that the supplier can provide the packing list with carton-level breakdown by HS code, plus any destination-required documents (SDS/MSDS, certificate of origin, fumigation certificate if wood pallets are used).

LCL vs. FCL: when to switch

The break-even between LCL and FCL depends on your freight forwarder's rates, but a reasonable rule of thumb: if your mixed consumables order exceeds 8–10 m³, request an FCL quote. Below that, LCL may still work — but ask your forwarder to quote both. The crossover point varies by lane (Asia–Middle East vs. Asia–South America, for example).
